About Michael
My name is Michael Thiesen, and I am proud to serve as the current mayor of Surrey, North Dakota. I’m also a union electrician with IBEW Local 714, a husband of 18 years, and the father of three children. I’ve lived in the Minot area my entire life and have proudly called District 3 home for nearly 19 years. Like many families in our district, I understand the value of hard work, responsibility, and community because I’ve lived it every day.
Why I Am Running
I am running for the North Dakota Senate because I believe working families deserve an honest voice and strong representation in Bismarck.
I know what it means to work long hours to provide for a family. Nothing was handed to me — I’ve worked hard for everything I have. I believe our state government works best when it remembers the people who keep North Dakota moving every day: working men and women, small business owners, farmers, families, and retirees.
My goal is simple: to help the people of District 3 and fight for practical solutions that improve everyday life.
“Working families deserve an honest voice in Bismarck.”
Making Life More Affordable
One of the biggest challenges facing families today is the rising cost of living. Housing costs continue to increase, healthcare is becoming more expensive, and everyday necessities are stretching family budgets further than ever before.
These are not political talking points to me — they are real issues affecting real people across our communities.
Strong Communities & Responsible Leadership
I believe effective leadership is built on accountability, communication, and cooperation. My focus is on practical, common-sense solutions that help communities grow while protecting the values that make North Dakota strong.
Family & Community
My wife and I have been married for 18 years and are raising our three children in the community we proudly call home.
My experiences as a husband, father, tradesman, and local leader continue to shape my commitment to serving the people of District 3.
Supporting Working Families
As a union electrician and local leader, I understand the importance of good-paying jobs, responsible government, and policies that strengthen local communities.
Experience
My public service began eight years ago when I was elected to the Surrey City Council. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to serve our community as mayor and work alongside residents, local leaders, and businesses to tackle challenges and accomplish meaningful goals.
I believe leadership is about bringing people together, listening to different perspectives, and finding ways to move communities forward. I’m proud of the proven record we’ve built in Surrey by focusing on cooperation, hard work, and results.
Looking Ahead
What gives me hope for the future is the strength and resilience of North Dakotans. Time and time again, we have shown that when communities come together, we can overcome challenges and accomplish great things.
I’m running to continue serving the people of District 3 with honesty, hard work, and a commitment to putting our communities first.
